THE DONALD SMARTO CIVIL WAR COLLECTION Comprised of 50 historical artifacts, this collection features rare photos of Lincoln, Grant, Lee, and Custer and excavated battlefield bullets, a cannonball, and a union officer’s sword. A loading demonstration with a Colt civil war revolver (the only replica in the collection) demonstrates the difficulties of quick battle response. Artifacts related to slavery are also presented as part of the classroom demonstration. Excellent period photos are shown with fascinating and little known facts about photography in the 1860's. These artifacts were acquired in fine antique stores in Gettysburg, Richmond, Fredericksburg, Baltimore, and Boston. The collection is used to teach children about an important part of American history.
