C11 1863 Gettysburg Hospital Bullet

Amputations of limbs were often performed without drugs like morphine. The bullet clearly bears human teeth marks and was found at the site of a makeshift union hospital. This is the origin of the phrase “biting the bullet”, an action to endure pain and trauma.
